Here in this article you are going to encounter with the hidden corners of the most vital substance of the earth.
Yes, you have guessed it right. So presence of water on earth is highly appreciated, but what needs to appreciate more than that, is something that you will get to know below.
Let's start with its vital nature and the things that you know-
At the first sight, water doesn't seem to be something that needs to be taken with care and it is genuine, as since long ago, we have been hearing that we have an abundance of water on our planet.
Among 8 Billion of us, there might be very few who actually aware about the fact that of 70%, only 2.5% of water is there which is fresh and can be used for drinking purposes.
Now the dilemma is that the way we are using it (should be called as exploiting it) indicating that even those 2.5% will not be fresh/potable in upcoming years!
This utmost stable bond of Hydrogen and the vital gas Oxygen has such a great importance for the human life that without this we can't imagine our life to sustain.
Apart from the vital role of water in quenching the thirst, there are some other wonderful applications of water.
Physical Properties-
Some common physical properties of water are-
Liquid at room temperature
Odorless
Tasteless
colorless
Chemical properties-
Apart from the general use of water for drinking, washing and other household activities, there are several chemical phenomena for which water is considered one of the leading used substances and for such purposes a chemist has to aware about its chemical properties.
Some Major Chemical Properties Are-
Universal solvent
Fire extinguisher
Highly reactive with alkali metals
Non-Toxic in nature etc.
So basically what we have seen till now is the requirement of water due to its huge no. of physical and chemical properties.
But what about those properties of the water, which are unknown to many of us!
Facts about water -
Compressibility-
Whenever we are talking about the compressibility of water, we assume that it is incompressible i.e, on applying pressure the volume of the water remains unchanged but it's not true!
In reality, when a large amount of pressure is applied over the confined water, it gets compressed.
Hence the water at the bottom of the ocean is denser than at the surface due to very large pressure there.
Water Intoxication / Overhydration-
We know that we require 3-4 liters of water to remain hydrated and optimize metabolism.
But what will happen when we start drinking more than this?
When we started drinking more than the suggested figure than due to overhydration it leads to a condition called WATER INTOXICATION. This results in overdilution of salt and the other electrolytes in our body, causing a serious concern called HYPONATREMIA.It is really a serious medical condition and one needs to be careful about this. Though death by overhydration is rare but still it can happen so one needs to be aware about this.
Suspended Water-
It is a very interesting fact that the amount of water that our atmosphere carries is greater than the total amount of water that we have in our rivers across the Globe!
Every single sunny day, about a trillion tons of water get evaporated and gets suspended in the atmosphere. Not this only, due to evaporation, this water reserve in the atmosphere is quite fresh than the quality of water that we have in our rivers across the globe.
What is so special with water at 4 degree Celsius ?
We know that in the general case, the density increases when we go in the sequence as GAS - LIQUID - SOLID.
But does this happen with water too?
We know that it's not the case with water. Even in water if we come down from gas to liquid ,the density surely increases, but in case of the liquid form of water there's something unusual happens at 4 DEGREE CELSIUS!
At 4 degrees Celsius the liquid water is highly densed and the amazing thing is that irrespective of change in its temperature whether we increase or decrease, it gets expanded in both the cases. Thus the density of water below and above this temperature decreases.
But why this happens ?
Actually, there's not anything special that why only at 4 degrees Celsius this happens, but the thing is that below this temperature when we cool down the water, it arranges itself in such a way that some of it's hydrogen bond gets broken down providing space to the molecules and causing increase in its volume and decrease in its density.
Water Facts Nutrition -
A health conscious person is very choosy in his diet like what to eat and what should be avoided. But when it comes to water, then we know in spite of containing 0% protein, sugar, fiber, carbs, none of us can dare to choose that whether we should drink it or not.
The above mentioned sentence seems to be quite weird in its way, but the thing is that we must appreciate the fantastic metabolism that we have. It means that in spite of not carrying almost any nutrients, Water is so important for us that we keep this above all the nutrients that require for the growth of our body.
Have you ever thought that apart from the urge to drink, what are the actual role of water in the body?
Human body, which is a system of billions of complex bio-chemical reactions that goes all across the body needs a specific temperature or what we called as the optimum temperature to carry out all such reactions.
Now here water as a nutrient play its major role as maintaining this optimum temperature inside the body at every single point and at every single second.
The above mentioned role is just a miraculous role of water, which we just drink to quench our thirst.
Moreover, almost every bio-chemical process that goes inside the body is not possible without using the water !
